Appliances

appliancesappliances

Appliances may be a pain to dispose of, but many contain hazardous materials, so they need to be recycled. Discarded appliances are second only to automobiles as a source of recycled metals.

Minnesota law requires that all major appliances be either reused or recycled -- it's illegal to put them with your garbage.

Appliances include:
  • Air conditioners
  • Clothes washers and dryers
  • Dehumidifiers
  • Dishwashers
  • Freezers
  • Furnaces
  • Garbage disposals
  • Heat pumps
  • Microwave ovens
  • Ovens
  • Refrigerators
  • Stoves/Ranges
  • Trash compactors
  • Water heaters

Reuse Tips

  • If your appliance is still in working condition, consider posting it on the Twin Cities Free Market, an online service for residents who want to give or get free reusable goods for the home, garage and garden.
  • Contact a local charity to ask about donating your used, functioning appliances. For a list, refer to the yellow pages under "charities".

Disposal Information

When disposing of refrigerators and freezers, be sure to disable all doors to keep children or animals from getting trapped inside. This can be done by removing the door or inside seal, or by bending the hinges so the door no longer closes. For more information on appliance recycling, contact your county:
