Each of the four months of the market season was given a different waste reduction theme. Over 1,000 people were involved in activities or received information related to waste reduction. July was Packaging Waste Reduction Month, with an information table at every market, a workshop on “Grocery Store Waste Reduction,” and the launch of the MPM/Green Guardian canvas bag giveaway. August was Food Waste Reduction Month, with an information table, composting workshops, Green Guardian kitchen scrap bucket giveaways, and the release of the MPM “Clean Community Cookbook.” September was Nontoxic Home Cleaning Month, with resources on household hazardous waste and nontoxic alternative cleaners at the information table, and nontoxic window cleaner “make and take” workshops. October was Junk Mail Reduction month, which included a display with information on how to get off of mass marketing lists. A Junk Mail Tree was created with fifth graders from the Anishinabe Academy and was displayed at the market and in the lobby of the Midtown YWCA, drawing even more attention to junk mail reduction.
