Sixteen students participated in the Green Guardian project, meeting at least once a week to engage in waste reduction activities from the Ounce of Prevention curriculum developed by the National Science Teachers Association. Students chose classroom paper waste reduction for their project. They researched the issue, interviewed stakeholders around the school, and came up with realistic proposals for solutions. The students created written and oral presentations that were presented to: ten classrooms (250 students); teachers from all grade levels; and over 300 parents at community functions. Students also created a letter for the Star Tribune on-line about things people can do at home to reduce waste, an article for the SE Angle neighborhood newspaper, a brochure on composting for the annual plant sale, and a picture book for preschoolers in a local playgroup.
