Disposal Information

Typically treated with the chemical compound creosote, railroad ties should not be put in the trash. Commonly reused in landscaping projects, railroad ties may be accepted by landscape businesses and nurseries; see your local phone directory under "Landscape Equipment and Supplies," or contact the Minnesota Materials Exchange program at (612) 624-1300 to list clean railroad ties in a free exchange service program. If railroad ties cannot be reused, contact your waste hauler for disposal options. For more information on how to manage creosote-treated railroad ties, treated wood and other wood waste, see Wood Waste.
