Contaminated soils usually result from spills or leaks of petroleum
products from aboveground or underground storage tanks. When you find a
leak or spill, you are required by law to inform the Minnesota Duty
Officer at the
Division of Home Land Security and Emergency Management; call the 24-hour hotline at (651) 649-5451 or (800) 422-0798.

Disposal Information
The soil will need to be laboratory tested, and in some cases,
excavated and disposed of properly. Check with businesses in your field
for consultant recommendations, or see your
local phone directory
under "Environmental and Ecological Services" or
"Engineers-Environmental." If the contaminated soil is the result of a
release from an aboveground or underground storage tank, and the
Minnesota Pollution Control Agency
(MPCA) requires its removal, then you may be eligible for reimbursement
of the associated costs. Reimbursement is paid through the Petroleum
Tank Release Clean-up Fund - the
Petrofund
administered by the Minnesota Department of Commerce. For specific
