Asbestos

asbestosasbestos

Hazardous
Banned From Garbage
Once used in over 3,000 products for strength, fire protection as well as thermal and acoustical insulation, asbestos continues to be used in some new building products. Asbestos is potentially harmful to human health when its fibers are disturbed and become airborne, which can occur during removal of anything containing it. Because asbestos is difficult to identify, you may want to have the suspected product tested if it is not clearly labeled.

Disposal Information

Asbestos removal is highly regulated. Call the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. (MPCA) at (651) 296-6300. Visit the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) web site for information on proper removal procedures, or call (651) 215-0900 for help with your asbestos removal project and a directory of licensed asbestos contractors. All asbestos must be disposed of in a solid waste landfill that is approved for asbestos disposal.

Federal regulations contained in the National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) require a ten-working-day notification period for all asbestos removal projects and planned demolition projects (excluding residential buildings, four or fewer units, that are not a part of an urban renewal project, or under the control of someone other than the resident). The regulations also require an asbestos building survey prior to renovation or demolition projects. For notification forms and further details, call the MPCA at (651) 296-6300.
